Straddling the print world are a handful of printers who are rapidly emerging as key figures in the Indian print industry. Chief among them is Parksons Graphics, a commercial cum magazine printer, also a noted playing cards printer and winner of this category.

Parksons Graphics secured the top spot for the four entries: New Cuffe Parade brochure for Lodha Developers; Mercedes Benz brochure for Mercedes Benz; World One brochure again for Lodha Developers; and L‘Oreal Wedding Collection brochure for Ergo India. The quantities varied from 500 to 6,000 copies.

The judges were impressed by the print and finishing that according to them “brought to life the subject” that these brochures depicted with its very visual display of the product and the soft, subtle colours used throughout.

E.g.: A Mercedes brochure always set the bar high for Parksons Graphics and this E-Class brochure was no exception. The brochure used images of the car and according to Parksons Graphics, due to the nature of images, the printing required a very good colour balance, to ensure that there was no cast. And the solid silver picks up scratches very easily, hence due care had to be taken during the production.

The New Cuffe Parade and World One brochures were designed to showcase luxury and were printed on a 200gsm Natural Evolution and 280gsm Impressive Absolute White. The slipcase for New Cuffe Parade was printed on 160gsm Favini Cobble white. According to the company, the client demanded a thick and luxurious feel for the World One brochure.

The L’Oreal Wedding Collection was printed as a hardcase and a softcover. “This meant that though the binding and pagination were different, the brochure had to look identical. To achieve this across a run of over 6,000 brochures required a strong process and a good team,” states Parksons Graphics. The printing was done on coloured paper, with very subtle varnish adding a motif and a rich gold lettering.

For all these brochures, print, sewing and binding wasn’t easy, said Parksons Graphics, adding, “These techniques, however, are not new to us.”

In 1957, Parksons Graphics entered the printing industry as manufacturers of playing cards. Over the years, the company continued to add capacity. According to Abhishek Kejriwal, the new-generation director at Parksons, the company has upgraded its pre-press workflow to Kodak’s Prinergy and installed a new five-colour CD 74 Heidelberg and added section-sewing, gathering, perfect binding, as well. Parksons is also one of the few printers to be FSC certified.

The brochures were printed on the Heidelberg CD74-5LX and CD 102 presses, while Kodak plates were outputted on a Creo 8-Up Trendsetter using a Prinergy workflow. Post-press included galley-making, punching, mesh fitting, thermal gloss lamination, spot UV and debossing.
